GE Experimental Courses: Instructions and Deadlines

Each new experimental course submitted for GE must follow the Educational Objectives and Criteria that have been agreed on for General Education, which has been designed as a coherent program emphasizing certain learning outcomes.

  1. Consult with the GE Area Chair about your course
  2. Fill out the course description form.  
    You can visit the  Course Description Form  on the Curriculum Development web page.  You will be able to go to each section of the Course Description Form for definitions and for help in filling out the form.  At the same site, you will also find a Course Description Form you can DOWNLOAD.
  3. Refer to the GE Syllabus Guidelines and address the GE Educational Objectives and Criteria in the Course Description form; in particular, Section III. Syllabus (learning outcomes, course content and assessment methods).
  4. Send ONE electronic copy of the entire form to gened@polymail.calpoly.edu.
  5. Once the course has been approved for GE, the GE office will send an email approval to the proposer, with copies to the Department Chair and the Associate Dean. The APPROVED experimental course proposal will be attached electronically to the email.
  6. The course proposer needs to print the approved GE proposal and obtain final signatures from the Department Chair, and the Associate Dean or Dean.
  7. Lastly, the signed proposal MUST be sent to Academic Programs, Building 01, room 315 for the Vice Provost's signature. This must be done before class scheduling will be notified.
