Experimental Course Deadlines

Please read the information below. It will give you an overview of the GE course proposal process.

I. First Review - GE Area Chair, GE Area Committee

CONSULT with both your Department Chair and the appropriate GE Area Chair in the initial planning stages.  The Department Chair must support your GE course proposal, and the GE Area Chair will provide you with assistance on how to meet the the specific GE Educational Objectives and Criteria.

Please allow plenty of time to develop your course. Phone calls, e-mail exchanges and personal meetings may be necessary to resolve questions and concerns.

AREA A/C : Arts and Humanities (Chair- Kathryn Rummell)
AREA B/F: Science, Math, and Technology (Chair- Matt Moelter)
AREA D: Society and the Individual (Chair- Andrew Morris)

Fill out the Course Proposal Form and submit electronically to the GE office. (mtool@calpoly.edu) The GE information on this form is found in Syllabus, Section III . The course will be distributed to the GE Area Chair and to the appropriate committees.

Your Department Chair needs to send an email to the GE office (mtool@calpoly.edu) endorsing the course.

The course goes through both the GE review and the regular curriculum review (Department, College, and Senate Curriculum Committees). The GE Committee looks for different things than the Curriculum Committee.

II. Final Review - GE Governance Committee

After the GE Area Chair and Area Committee have reviewed your course, the GE Area Chair will make a recommendation to the GE Governance Committee. The GE Governance Committee will address any concerns regarding the course, and make the final decision on approval. If the course needs changes before approval, the Area Chair will contact the faculty member.

Before GE approval is sent, we need the final electronic version of the GE Course Proposal sent to the GE office. (mtool@calpoly.edu) Blackboard is updated with this information.

We also need a hard copy of the course signed by the Department Chair, Curriculum Chair, and the Dean. Send to: GE Program, Building 33, room 290A.
The course will be forwarded to Academic Programs for the Vice Provost's signature.

III. GE Approval - Official E-Mail Notice

The GE office will send an official e-mail notice to the faculty member proposing the course, the Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chair, GE Area Chair, and Academic Programs. The notice will state if the course is approved or not approved. If a course is not approved for GE, the specific concerns are explained.

IV. Appeal Process

If the course is not approved, the decision may be appealed. The faculty member should send an e-mail to the GE Director and address the specific concerns that have been made in the official e-mail notice.
