2009-11 Catalog: Proposing GE Courses and Modifications |
We invite you to submit your course for General Education. Please read the information below. It will give you an overview of the GE course proposal process.
I. Consultation
- CONSULT with both your Department Chair, your Dean/Associate Dean and the appropriate GE Area Chair in the initial planning stages.
- The Department Chair must support your GE course proposal or modification by sending an email endorsement to mtool@calpoly.edu
- The GE Area Chair will provide you with assistance on how to meet the specific GE Educational Objectives and Criteria.
AREA A/C : Arts and Humanities (Chair- Kathryn Rummell)
AREA B/F: Science, Math, and Technology (Chair- Matt Moelter)
AREA D: Society and the Individual (Chair- Andrew Morris)
- Please allow plenty of time to develop your course. Phone calls, e-mail exchanges and personal meetings may be necessary to resolve questions and concerns.

II. Reviews
- The course also goes through the regular Curriculum Review.
- Department Curriculum Committee
- College Curriculum Committee
- Senate Curriculum Committee
- Approval by Vice Provost
- The course goes through GE Review AFTER the College Curriculm Committee.
- Review by GE Area Committee
- Review by GE Governance Committee/Recommendation to Provost
- Approval by Provost
- Deadline to GE Office April 7, 2008
III. GE Certification - Official E-Mail Notice
The GE office will send an official e-mail notice to the faculty member proposing the course or modification, the Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chair, GE Area Chair, and Academic Programs. The notice will indicate approval or not, with an explanation of specific concerns if there are any.
IV. Appeal Process
If the course or modification is not approved, the decision may be appealed. The faculty member should send an e-mail to the GE Director and address the specific concerns that have been mentioned in the official e-mail notice.
