Announcements

  • Josh Machamer, Mary Pedersen, Patrick O'Sullivan and Andrew Schaffner will be attending the AAC&U Conference on General Education and Assessment: A Sea Change in Student Learning 
    Dates of Conference are February 28 to March 2, 2013.
  • GE meeting on February 28 is cancelled.
  • GE course information was distributed to Academic Senate Curriculum Committee for comments.
  • There is discussion on a possible open window for GE courses submitted before the end of the year. More information will be available soon.

Business

  1. Discussion and evaluation of ideas for GE delivery/vision, flexibility, pathways and comparisons with other CSU institutions
  2. Reference to EO 1065 General Education Breadth Requirements

Discussion/Comments

  • Discussion on out of state transfer agreements for GE course articulation. Is it possible to improve the agreements?
  • Discussion on AP credit scores. Should the AP scores be raised ? This would not be the purview of the GE Committee. It would be the purview of the Department Chairs.
  • Discussion of the initiative from the CSU on bringing all degree programs to 180 units and how GE should be prepared to respond. Where can the flexibility be found in GE?
  • Comment on incorporating Writing Across the Curriculum into General Education program to improve the writing experience
  • Comment - Employers are concerned that Cal Poly graduates should be better writers.
  • Concerns with Writing Intensive Courses in GE going large (A1, A3, C1, C2, C4, D5). When courses go large, they can no longer can provide 'writing intensive' class experience.
  • WASC student attitudinal survey - Data showed that students do not associate GE with "Learn by Doing". Bruno Giberti will share data with committee.
  • Possibility of conducting student open forums/focus groups - to see what students want from General Education courses
  • Comments on students' perception that GE classes should be easier.
