Continued discussion on possible alternatives to GE upper-division (12 unit requirement based on EO 1065)

• Concern from the committee that the draft GE proposal/ideas discussed on 4/04/13 had been misrepresented as "a proposal that was endorsed by the GE committee. This proposal was circulated within the CLA chairs and in other departments.
• The committee has just started discussion on the possible alternatives to making GE more flexible and collaborative but they were not ready for a proposal to be released at this time.
• Josh Machamer, Chair, discussed with the committee how the draft proposal was originally developed (as a working document) to clarify misunderstandings to the committee.
• At this time, the committee does not support the creation of a new upper-division category for GE that would allow double-counting within the major/program.
• The committee feels that the attributes around the type of GE experience we are looking to create for our students at Cal Poly would not be strengthened by this type of idea.
• The committee is willing to pull out the parts of the proposal that should be explored, ideas of integration/interdisciplinary experience, team-teaching structures, writing across the curriculum and theme based activities.
• Continued discussion on GE potential revisions at the next meeting
