Business

Discussion on possible alternatives to GE upper-division (12 unit requirement based on EO 1065)

  • What are some of the ideas being discussed in the draft proposal?
  • A new 4 unit upper-division GE area defined as an integrative experience or upper-division GE capstone experience
  • All colleges could possibly satisfy their upper-division GE requirements between 4 categories: C4/Arts and Humanities, D5/Society and the Individual, F/Technology, and a new category to be determined
  • Programs could potentially be allowed to double count this new area for both major and GE
  • All colleges would still need to adhere to the current 72-unit GE distribution model
  • Discussion on possible ideas for the new area - writing-intensive, focused on critical thinking, demonstrate integrative learning, linked with mandatory assessment (5 year review) accountability for demonstrating outcomes
  • Discussion on opportunities for team teaching, cross listing, project/team building, e-portfolio options
