Business

Continue discussion on the charge of the GE Governance Board : Memo from Jeffrrey D. Armstrong to Steve Rein, Chair, Academic Senate (PDF)

  • Josh Machamer - Update from Steve Rein, Academic Senate Chair - clarified expectations due at the end of spring quarter from GE Governance Board
The committee was concerned with the short time frame allotted to complete tasks efficiently.
The Senate would like some ideas/options/recommendations of finding 4 units in the GE curriculum.
A 4-unit cut is not open for discussion.

How can GE allow more double-counting (GE and major) to reduce units for high-unit majors?
How can GE be more flexible (short term) in the curriculum without revising the whole program?

Discussion followed with a variety of ideas from the committee:

  • Could majors propose courses for B6 (Upper-division Science and Mathematics)?
  • Could new departments propose courses for D2 (Political Economy)?
  • Could new departments propose courses for D4 (Lifelong Learning and Self Development)? Possible service learning in D4 area
  • Encourage collaborations to develop new GE courses. Allow new majors to propose courses in existing GE area
  • Possible procurement of mini-grant options, professional development funds to develop new courses
  • Shift to learning outcomes
  • Consensus to move away from eliminating C4 exemption for Engineers
  • Consensus to move away from proposing a new GE upper-division area (integrated learning category, writing-intensive area)
