GE Governance Committee Membership and Responsibilities

GE Committee members serve three-year renewable terms that are staggered to promote continuity. Qualifications of GE Committees are faculty members with a demonstrated interest in GE and who have a thorough understanding of, and deep conviction and commitment to, the philosophy and conceptual goals of the General Education Program. The provost appoints GEB Committee members after consultation with the Academic Senate.

  • 8 members and the GE Director.
  • 2 members from College of Science and Mathematics
  • 2 members from College of Liberal Arts
  • 1 member from College of Agriculture
  • 1 member from College of Architecture and Environmental Design
  • 1 member from College of Engineering
  • 1 member from Orfalea College of Business

GE Governance Committee Responsibilities

  • Meets every other Wednesday from 9 to 10 am
  • Recommends approval of courses for GE
  • Develops GE programs and policies, and coordinates assessment of GE courses
  • Encourages innovation through linked courses, interdisciplinary courses, team teaching, and student learning communities
  • Addresses issues related to community-college GE programs
  • Promotes and coordinates GE-related activities such as conferences, seminars, and speakers

GE Area Sub-Committees - Membership and Responsibilities

Area committee members will be appointed by the GE Committee after consultation with the Academic Senate. They serve three-year renewable terms.

  • Area A/C Committee: Communications, Arts and Humanities
  • Area B/F Committee: Science and Mathematics/Technology
  • Area D/E Committee: Society and the Individual
  • 7 members including one student
  • At least 4 members and the student must be from the departments/colleges in the subject area

GE Area Sub-Committees - Responsibilities

  • Meet approximately 3 times per quarter, except in curriculum cycle years where meetings can be more frequent
  • Advise the GE Committee on policies related to each GE area
  • Review new courses proposed for each GE area
  • Develop assessment strategies and programs for GE courses already in place in each area
