New Charges for the GEGB for 2016-17

There are three charges.

Charge 1:  Course Review Process will take place during fall quarter 2016.  Brenda has already approved minor changes (course modifications) with the approval of the GEGB.  Many of the course modifications have to do with the requirements for D5 prerequisites (departments can elect to reduce pre-requisites in this area).  Other minor changes are in titles and small edits in course descriptions.

  • Note: Guidelines in course titles are 40 words or less, phrases are okay, focus is on content and "exploration of".  Course descriptions should not include any type of marketing to students.  The Office of the Registrar will assist with the review of course titles.
  • Handout - GE Course Guidelines (PDF). This document has guidelines for faculty to consider when reviewing GE course proposals.  This handout was reviewed by the GEGB.

Action Items:

  • GEGB members will review course proposals through the "Academics System" and utilize the timeline in the Course Review Schedule (PDF).
  • GEGB review of course proposals will mirror the schedule of  the Academic Senate Curriculum Committee.

Charge 2:  Review the "Course Refresh" process.  (Winter quarter) Some GE courses have been on the books for over ten years, and may need to be refreshed.  GEGB will work in tandem with the Academic Senate Curriculum Committee during winter quarter to develop a cycle, processes and possible on-line forms.

  • Note:  Draft of GE Course Renewal Process (PDF) referenced in GE Self-Study
  • Note:  The USCP task force is also looking at this "Course Refresh" process. Currently 83% of USCP courses are also GE.  Bruno Giberti and Denise Isom (C0-Chairs of USCP task force) are drafting a resolution to "possibly add the oversight of USCP courses to the responsibilities of the GEGB.

Action Items:

  • Brenda may possibly develop a sub-committee to assist in this area.
  • Bruno will share the draft of the resolution with Brenda.
  • Katie will share the USCP Task force notes from spring 2016 with Brenda.

Charge 3:  Review Quarter Plus.  Primary concerns are with freshmen and upper-division writing-intensive courses. How are the classes selected.

Action Items:

  • Brenda will meet with Brian Tietje in the near future. He may be asked to give a presentation to the group.
  • Katie will request specific enrollment data for Quarter Plus from the Extended Education office for 2015 and 2016.  She will report back to Brenda.
