Discussion/Comments on GE Site Visit/Self Study
-
Diversity/Inclusivity Meeting - There will be a broad discussion of GE. The GEGB committee is invited to attend. Katie will calendar.
-
Writing Intensive Meeting
Clare Battista will reach out to members in OCOB who teach GEGB writing-intensive courses.
How do you reach out to GE faculty and faculty during the site visit?
- Discussion on introduction/GE self-study and the restructuring of GEGB
We had GE area chairs prior to restructuring.
The previous structure was a university committee. The new structure is under the Academic Senate.
How is the current structure of GE going?
-
The new structure has streamlined the GE process, and instead of several reviews of a course proposal, there is only one committee review (GEGB).
-
Transition from Area Committees
Some of committees had release time; B/F chair could work with proposers
How does that happen now? The self-study- talks about enrollment management. Chairs could participate in this area.
Is there a budgetary concern on release time for GE sub-committees?
Where is GE headed?
- Is it too big? What is the availability? What are the student options?
- GE/University assessment has made quite a bit of progress.
- GE Program Learning Outcomes were created.
- We are now enforcing prerequisites.
- Looking Forward: We need to initiate our GE course renewal process.
- We need more outreach with advising.
- Do we want to pursue the renewal process? How can we work with the Academic Senate Curriculum Committee?
- We want more collaboration with GE/disciplines.
Is there anything the GEGB wants to focus on?
-
What have we done with our PLOs?
-
We need follow up. How do we implement them?
-
We will add PLOs to the GE course proposal process.
-
We need to communicate the value of a liberal education to students.
-
We need endorsement about the value of GE from the top administrators.
-
How do we initiate an action plan - How do we proceed with the next steps?
-
How can we pursue creative collaboration, team teaching....When will we find time to do the creative things?
-
Mary - We will need to come up with a model to support what we want to do.
-
Neal - We should continue partnerships and work with CTLT to target particular disciplines.
-
How can the reviewers help us? How can we change the culture?
-
Where does USCP belong? At one time, there was a USCP committee, and it is now managed by the Academic Senate Curriculum Committee.
Collective Thoughts
-
How do we manage the course renewal process?
-
How can we manage the current curriculum? Should we have a collection period during the summer? How often should we assess courses?
-
How can we drive the conversation about course renewal?
-
How can we manage the GE Program?
-
How do we make a program out of something that is dispersed?
-
Is there enough capacity for oversight or leadership?
-
How do other campuses manage this process?
-
How can we improve the curricular process when programs put forth their curriculum packages? We want to avoid last minute problems that create double-counting issues and reduction of overall units.
-
GE should become a college that would oversee GE.
This would require changing the entire GE structure in terms of budgeting for classes to colleges. It would be a big undertaking to do this.
