Business:

  • Discussion of priorities for the GE Task Force/Make Up of Task Force
  • Discussion of Foreign Language GE credit on Cal Poly Study Abroad Programs

Discussion of Task Force Structure

  • Discuss processes for selecting faculty members representing each GE Area (A,B, C,D, F)  Should these members be recommendations from the GEGB?
  • Will there be a "call" from the Academic Senate on faculty members?
  • Do we need to recommend processes to follow on the task force selection?
  • Do we need to specify a PCS member from Advising?
We can add a footnote at the bottom* specifying 1 PCS member
  • How does the Director of Writing Program relate to GE priorities
Writing would relate to Program Learning Objectives (writing)

Discussion of Priorities for GE Task Force

  • GE course review process - What specific details do we need?
  • Perception of GE
How can we add education of GE in this area?
Do we want to look at a new name for GE?
  • Can we add themes to the meaning-making section?
  • Do we need to talk about writing-intensive issues?
  • Do we need to look at future needs for students (Example: civil engagement)
  • Clarification of Task Force Process
Who will be creating the task force? - Provost/Senate Chair
Where does our priority list go?  - Provost/Senate Chair
Should there be a meeting with the Provost after the draft is final?
  • We need two examples when we talk about GE course requirements and expected outcomes within GE area (Example: Area F and Writing)
  • We need to add introductory language before we list the priorities. We need to make clear that the recommendations came from the GE Program review
  • Include recommendations from Program Review

Foreign Language Discussion

  • Recommendation for using a different prefix and name for Foreign Language courses taken through the Cal Poly Study Abroad Program.
  • If these courses are not taught by Cal Poly faculty, will that affect financial aid?
How many students would be affected?
  • We have set generous articulation for study abroad and community college credit.
  • There was concern for C2 credit for these courses.
  • We have defined C2 much more narrowly than CSU requirements.  Interpretation is broader on other campuses.
  • There are many differences in Cal Poly's program (Students should have to get at least 2 courses in Great Books in Area C.)
  • What are the objectives to move this forward?
  • Clarity - Courses would need to have unique number, prefix, description
  • New proposals would need to be developed and submitted
  • Can we use an existing MLL course?  It would have to be GE.
  • Many students start a minor after they come back to Cal Poly, will this create another layer.  What about MLL 270?
  • We need to create a new mechanism for developing this program.
