Meeting Details

  • Date:  5/18/17
  • Time:  11:10 am to 12 noon
  • Place:  01-301
  • Attendance:  Brenda Helmbrecht, Josh Machamer, Emily Fogle, Aaron Keene, Matt Klepper, Bruno Giberti, John Jasbinsek, Rachel Fernflores, Neal MacDougall

Announcements

  • CSU is reviewing policy on Quantitative Reasoning.  CSU campuses responded to the questionnare from the Chancellor's Office.  This could possibly lead to some editing in EO 1100, but nothing firm has been decided at this time

Business

Review of POLS 111 California Constitution and Government (e-addendum)

  • Description of Course - already approved in Face to Face/Independent Study

Basic aspects of California state government. Satisfies GE D1 for students who have passed both AP US Government and US History exams, or transfer students who have received advice in writing from the Office of the Registrar to take POLS 111.

Comments/Discussion

  • What is the evidence of active learning in the proposal?
  • Why should it change from an independent study course to an online course?
  • The online form should be improved so that responses can be clearer.
Brenda will work with Susan Olivas on making suggestions to improve form.
  • Comment on 80% of the course being replaced by technology.  We need more information in this area.
  • We need a broader discussion on online learning.
  • Consensus to move the proposal forward

Discussion on Resolution on Review of Courses with Condensed Time Schedules

  • Resolved clause:  That an existing course or group of courses that in its new condensed form averages less than three days per unit must be approved by the appropriate College Curriculum Committee(s) and the Academic Senate Curriculum Committee at least 60 days before they are offered.
  • Is 60 days enough time to review course prior to offering?
  • Would this require the course to be offered in another mode?
  • The "Quarter Plus" courses are more intensified, and require more hours than Study Abroad classes, where the student is totally immersed.
  • The resolution does create a process, standards, and assessment.
  • The resolution has not gone to the Senate yet.
