Discussion of Area D5 Prerequisites

Background

  • In reviewing Area D5 courses in fall 2015, Brenda noted that some D5 courses were requiring two lower-division courses as a pre-req, while many other courses only required one. She wanted to discuss with the committee how to maintain consistency in this policy.  For the last two catalog cycles, the "two pre-req policy" had been enforced because this is the policy that has been stated on the GE site.  Brenda has been seeking clarity since seeing the discrepancy in D5 pre-reqs.
  • Reference to the 2010 Pre-req Project
In 2010, the GEGB in collaboration with the Registrar’s Office, undertook an ambitious pre-requisite project designed to enforce and streamline prerequisites in upper-division GE courses.  The background document for this project had not yet been located for referencing as of 2/16/16.
  • There was concern that it was possible that the  GE objectives and criteria document for D5 had not been updated to reflect the change that had been made as part of the pre-requisite project in 2010.
  • The GEGB voted 5-2 to change the pre-requistes to two lower-division Area D courses for GE Area D5 to ensure consistency in the policy.

Update

After the Feb 16 GEGB meeting, details from the 2010 pre-req project were located. The project clearly showed that the D5 pre-reqs had been changed to one lower-division Area D class.  Given this new information, Brenda decided to vacate the GEGB vote.  She will work with Katie to send memos to the departments offering D5 courses to let them know about the D5 pre-req.

Preliminary Discussion of GE Course Renewal Process

  • HLTH 250 course was proposed as a modification with a change of prefix. (The course has been on the books for GE D4 since 2000.) Brenda worked closely with the proposers on the course modification.
  • In the modification, new course learning objectives for the course were aligned to GE objectives and criteria.  This will be attached as an appendix to the original course proposal.
  • Brenda presented the HLTH proposal to the GEGB as a way to start the conversation about a future renewal process.  Currently, no mechanism exists to revisit a course proposal after the course has been approved.
  • There was discussion for a possible need for a new course proposal form that would streamline this renewal process.  This would ensure that the course gets an update. We need to determine exactly what we want on this form.
  • Discussion on the new form - What needs to be included?
Course Learning Outcomes, assessment information, enrollments, delivery, expanded course content (syllabus), and a possible pull down numbering system for the educational objectives and criteria.
  • There will be further discussion on this process at future meetings.
