Provost Addresses the GEGB

The Provost attended the GEGB meeting to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the GE Task Force and the GEGB.

GE Task Force Roles and Responsibilities

  • The GE Task Force has the charge of one of the biggest, most complex tasks, to look at the big picture of "re-envisioning" GE. The Provost explained the need to create an educational GE experience for our students that will bring them into the future. The task force will make recommendations regarding the structure and the content of the program.
  • They will look at the self study and the report/recommendations made by the GE Program Review Team , consult with divisions on campus and make decisions about what to prioritize.
  • Recommendations made by the GE Task Force will need to be approved by the Academic Senate, the Provost, and the President.
  • The GE Task Force will be the chaired by Andrew Morris (History), and Gregg Fiegel (Civil & Environmental Engineering), both who have been involved with the GEGB in the past, and will provide leadership in the process. Brenda Helmbrecht, current GE Chair, Josh Machamer, previous GE Chair, and Denise Isom, current GEGB member and Ethnic Studies Chair, will represent the current GEGB on the GE Task Force.

GEGB Roles and Responsibilities

The GEGB has an important and significant role and will continue to do its usual work. There are significant issues that the GEGB needs to address:

  • Revisit Writing-Intensive Courses
Are we meeting the goals in this area?
  • Diversity Learning Objectives (DLOs)
Are we meeting the goals in this area?
We don't have a process in place to make sure this is happening.
Continue to pursue USCP resolution/agendize with Academic Senate
  • Developing a course renewal process
This will be in tandem with the Academic Senate Curriculum Committee (ASCC)
Ensure that courses are meeting the educational outcomes
We currently lack checks and balances.
Review of all courses in GE - How do we set up a process to review courses?
Any proposed change in the process will have to go through Academic Senate.
  • Assessment/More Integration of GEGB
  • Communication between GEGB and GE Task Force
The GEGB needs to provide feedback to Task Force about anything we think we can add value to. (This can be directed through Josh and Brenda.)

Questions to Provost

Q: Will the GEGB be making recommendations to the GE Task Force or just implementing?

A. Yes, but recommendations must be implementable, practical, and reasonably achieved.

Q: How can we address gaps in program review? There are courses taught in the major that serve other students (support courses). There is another gap where parts of GE are not listed under the core competencies.

A: We can partially address this through the integration of GE assessment.

Q: What is happening with the system in terms of EO 1000? Are they looking at new guidelines?

A: There was a memo sent out on March 10, 2017, asking for input on EO 1000, in terms of review and advice from campuses.
